To launch the brand new library at Hazel Grove High School, we held our first digital author event at the end of last term.
Olivia Mulligan, ‘poet laureate’ for BBC Radio York, ran a poetry workshop with some of our Year 8 students, making use of the fantastic new library facilities.
Students had the opportunity to work with Olivia and learn more about the creative process and her own writing career. Olivia shared her latest collection, Poems on a Gatepost, which she wrote while in lockdown and shielding.
She used the time to write 72 poems in 72 days, which she then attached to a gatepost in her village and we now have a number of her anthologies in the library for students to read.
The library is also the perfect place to feature the incredible artwork and creative design produced by students, which is showcased on the walls and windowsills.
There are many opportunities for students to use the new library to immerse themselves in
literature beyond the curriculum and they are encouraged to use the space in English lessons, as a place to study and also to socialise at break times.
We are delighted to be able to offer students this multi-functional space, which is already proving a very popular addition to the school.
